If you have a nice, gently used or unworn wedding gown and you don’t want to hang on to it, a good place to sell it is on eBay. If you’ve never sold anything on eBay, it can be a stressful and somewhat overwhelming experience. The following tips are intended to help you create a listing that will get you the most bang for your buck. This is not intended as a tutorial for eBay’s listing pages.

If you are not a registered eBay member, go ahead and register here. It’s pretty painless.

The most important thing to get a good price for your gown is a good picture.

Take several pictures of the actual dress either on a model or a mannequin or use your own wedding pictures if you can. Don’t worry if you don’t have a super-model’s figure. Your buyers are more interested in how the dress will look on them and your picture will be more realistic than a model’s. Pictures of gowns hanging from a closet don’t show the gown’s shape as well and will most likely result in lower prices. Swiping a picture from the original designer’s website is not a good idea. This is copyright infringement (theft). You will most likely have your listing pulled by eBay and you will forfeit the listing fee. Don’t rely on a link to the designer’s website either. Odds of a buyer clicking through to get a look at the picture of the gown are slim. This is short attention span shopping so give them the best image you can right away.

Fork out the few extra pennies to have the picture show up in the gallery option.

Next, write a good description.

Tell them why you are selling the gown. If it is new and you changed your mind, be sure to note that. If it has been worn, even for a few hours at your wedding, it is no longer new. Be sure to be as honest as you can about the condition. Note dirt, stains, missing buttons, beads, etc. This will save you a lot of heartache after the sale is done. Note if it has been altered. Try to give the buyers as much information about the size (measurements) as you can. Wedding gowns run small so be sure to note if the size you are giving is the wedding gown size or your street clothes size. What color is it? Materials? If you know the style that’s good to note too. Note if the gown has been cleaned and who cleaned it. State what your return policy is for the gown. It’s okay, in wedding dresses, for there to be no returns allowed. When you are done, run a spell check on your description. Misspellings can be a big turn off.

Select good keywords for your title. Saying something like “beautiful wedding dress” is okay, but “Monique Lhuillier wedding dress” is better (if it’s a Monique Lhuillier). Few people will search for “beautiful.” Be as specific as you can in the title. Try to hit the basics like:
wedding and/or bridal
dress and/or gown
white or ivory
designer’s name
and if you have room the size or style

Next, decide on a minimum price you are willing to take for the dress and set your initial asking price. Don’t use a reserve price as many buyers dislike reserve auctions and refuse to bid on them. If you’re feeling brave you can start it at $0.99 and see what happens. That’s risky though, and I wouldn’t recommend it unless you really don’t care what happens. Try to set a reasonable price. Look at closing prices for similar items and price it under that. Items outrageously priced will not sell and you will have just wasted the listing fee.

Set a reasonable shipping price. Experienced buyers on eBay avoid auctions with outrageous shipping prices. It’s worth it to spend a little time researching what your shipping expense will be. Add a little extra for packaging and leave it at that.

Good luck. Feel free to ask questions in the comments. I’ll answer as soon as I can.
